SYDNEY’S celebrated design star Dion Lee has vowed to open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia with a blockbuster show.
The New York-based designer has scored the coveted opening night-time slot for the May event, and plans to unveil one of his biggest ever runway collections, with 40 looks including ready-to-wear, swim, suiting and eyewear.
“I’m extremely excited, opening for MBFWA is something I’ve always wanted to do and this year, with a lot of new projects in the mix, the timing feels perfect,” Lee said.
“I think there’s a strong synergy between both brands and a sophistication that speaks to our aesthetic through strong silhouettes and engineered design.”

He debuted his first collection at the Sydney fashion festival in 2009 and this season will take on an ambassadorial role with the luxury car brand. On Thursday he will unveil a trackside runway show at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.
Mercedes-Benz product communications manager Jerry Stamoulis believes Lee is a great example of how to succeed in the cutthroat retail industry.
“He is a Sydney boy who built an empire with true talent and hard work,” he said.
